Day End Report

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 153 points at 9,316, and thereafter exhibited range-bound movement in the morning session. Fresh buying in the afternoon deals saw the index move to higher levels. The index firmed up and extended gains as the day progressed on the back of sharp gains in realty and metal stocks.

The Sensex rallied to a high of 9,679, and finally settled with a gain of 492 points at 9,655.

The BSE Realty index zoomed 12.5% to 2,005, and the Metal index surged 8.5% to 5,182. The Oil & Gas index gained 7% at 5,906.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,527 stocks traded, 1,529 advanced, 879 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

DLF zoomed 19% to Rs 263. Mahindra & Mahindra soared 15.5% to Rs 287.

Grasim surged 13.7% to Rs 1,099. Tata Steel rallied nearly 11% to Rs 217.

Reliance Communications, ACC and Wipro gained around 10% each at Rs 228, Rs 476 and Rs 262, respectively.

Reliance advanced 9.5% to Rs 1,227. Jaiprakash Associates, Sterlite and Reliance Infrastructure moved up nearly 9% each to Rs 75, Rs 272 and Rs 602, respectively.

ICICI Bank surged over 8% to Rs 400. HDFC and Tata Motors added 7.5% each to Rs 1,624 and Rs 163, respectively.

Tata Power was up 6.5% at Rs 732. Hindalco and Satyam were up nearly 6% each to Rs 54 and Rs 237, respectively.

Ranbaxy was the sole loser among the index stocks - down 1% at Rs 211.

Jyoti Structures on Tuesday said it has bagged two orders worth Rs 253 crore from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd and Eskom Enterprises (Pty) Ltd for construction of transmission lines. The company has bagged Rs 160-crore order from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd for construction of transmission lines and sub-stations. Besides, the company's joint venture company Jyoti Structures Africa (Pty) Ltd has bagged a contract for Eskom Enterprises (Pty) Ltd, the electricity utility of South Africa for construction of transmission line. The scope of the order from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company includes supply and erection of Bujagali Interconnection Project, the manufacturer of transmission line towers informed the Bombay Stock Exchange. The contract valued at around $39.64 million (Rs 160 crore) is to be executed in 24 months, the company said, adding the company would construct 220 kV and 132 kV transmission lines and substations.

Inflation hits 42-week high of 7.57%

Inflation rose to a 42-week high of 7.57 per cent in the 12 months to April 19, higher than the previous week’s annual rise of 7.33 per cent, largely on account of an increase in food, metal products and industrial fuel prices, official data showed. Analysts said that the inflation of 7.57 per cent was “slightly higher” than their expectations and this could be due to price increase in tea and certain items in the steel group. India’s wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation now stood highest since November 13, 2004, when it was 7.68 per cent. Economists expressed confidence that the recent fiscal and monetary measures would yield results in the coming weeks. They, however, noted that inflation was unlikely to return to the comfort zone of the Reserve Bank of India any time this fiscal. “There could be some easing of food inflation given the good wheat production and likelihood of good monsoon.
