Small and mid-cap stocks still lagging (The Hindu Business Line 14th Feb 2008)Investors’ lack of interest in in the small- and mid-cap stocks have led to these segments underperforming the benchmark indices. While the Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex fell 18.26 per cent since last month, small- and mid-caps lost 25.04 per cent and 28.71 per cent respectively. Technical indicators such as circuit summary and advance/decline ratio have captured the grim picture of the market. More than 1,000 stocks had hit the lower circuit filter in a few days. On Wednesday, as many as 870 stocks – majority of them from mid-& small-cap space – have hit the lower circuit whereas 66 stocks hit the upper circuit. While 769 stocks advanced, 1,940 stocks ended weak on Wednesday. The advance/decline trend was somewhat better on Wednesday as the ratio used to be 1:6 or 1:7 a few days ago. Even on Wednesday, while the Sensex was up by 2.05 per cent, the mid-cap segment gained only 0.24 per cent and the small-...

Midcaps, smallcaps shave off nearly 40% from recent highs (CNBV-TV18, Moneycontrol.com 11th Jan 2008)You can count the numbers, and well, they will be disappointing to put forward. But as mentioned earlier, midcaps and smallcaps had seen a steep increase and have already outperformed all the major or the largecap stocks, if one sees before this correction. However, this correction has been much steeper than the rise which, even the midcap and smallcap industries have seen. To put numbers into perspective, the midcap index, which has gained nearly 25% since December beginning, before the correction, has lost nearly 8% this week in merely five trading sessions. The smallcap index had ginaed nearly 33% since December before the correction started. However, it has lost nearly 10% in the last five days. Most of these stocks, which are momentum stocks or which are the trading stocks, have lost nearly anywhere between 25% and 40%. You can pick any stock, or in a major way the momentum stocks...

See more correction in midcaps: IL&FS (CNBC TV18, Moenycontrol.com 9th Jan 2008) Vibhav Kapoor of IL&FS told CNBC-TV18 that he continues to be pretty bullish. He adds that the midcap and smallcap indices were up some 30-35%, so obviously some sort of correction was very much on the cards and that’s what been happening for the last 3 or 4 days. Provided the corporate results don’t disappoint, there will be upward move resumption very soon, he says. Read the Complete Interview

Be vigilant on Mid and Small Cap Frontier

Stay cautious on midcap space - Udayan Mukherjee of CNBC TV 18 (CNBC TV18, Moneycontrol.com 9th Jan 2008) The US markets have been down for 4 out of the past 5 days, but the Asian markets are not sulking; only some of them are down. The midcap space is not looking good for the last 3 days, there was a complete selloff yesterday. That space needs to be watched. Our markets: We have twin hangover, of the midcaps sell off yesterday and the US markets sell off overnight. Not that Asia is sulking very much this morning. The Asian markets are down but not a whole lot. So we are dealing with US pain quite okay and quite well this morning but even so this is yet another sell off in the US markets and no redemption from there at all. Yesterday the Sensex might have been flat but the midcap and the smallcap indices got clobbered. So that’s the space one needs to watch extremely closely, as we go into trade today. It’s not been looking very good for the last three days for midcaps and yesterday ...

Mid-cap segment offers huge returns (The Economic Times 7th Jan 2008)If you have been reading business papers or watching TV channels, you would not have missed hearing the words ‘mid or small’ cap. Before defining what a mid or small cap is, here’s a primer, the word ‘cap’ or market capitalisation as it is known is calculated by multiplying a company’s shares outstanding by the current market price of one share. The investment community uses this figure to determine a company’s size as opposed to sales or total asset figures, says Investopedia. Accordingly, the number of small/mid-caps are far in excess of the large cap stocks. Large caps are the ones which form part of either the BSE Sensex-30 or the NSE CNX Nifty-50. More

Go back to history, if the last ten years data is to go by, the markets have posted positive returns, or in other words rallied in the last week of every year.
