TCS posts marginal rise in Q2 net on forex hedging losses

Tata Consultancy Services reported flat growth in net profit for the second quarter ended September 2008 as it encountered losses related to forex hedging and made provisions for two customers impacted by the US sub-prime crisis. TCS  reported a 1.5 per cent growth in net profit, at Rs 1271 crore against Rs 1251.6 crore in the same quarter a year ago. On a sequential basis the company’s net profit was down 1.5 per cent. Revenues were up by 25.3 per cent on a year ago basis to Rs 6953 crore. The company currently has an open hedge position of $1.8 billion. During the immediate previous quarter the rupee reversed direction and depreciated by 8.3 per cent vis-À-vis the US dollar. TCS is currently pursuing 20 outsourcing deals of above $50 million, four each in the retail, manufacturing and BFSI space.

Reliance Capital profit jumps 86% to Rs135 cr (Live mint.com 25th Jan 2008)The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group firm, Reliance Capital Ltd (RCL), on Thursday reported a 86% jump in its third quarter (Q3) net profit, helped by 210% growth in total income. The stand-alone net profit for the fiscal 2008 October-December quarter stood at Rs135 crore, compared with Rs73 crore in the year-ago quarter. Total income jumped to Rs376 crore in the latest quarter, from Rs121 crore reported in the year-ago period, the firm said. On a consolidated basis, RCL’s net profit rose 28% to Rs118 crore for the just concluded quarter from Rs92 crore in the same period last year, while the total income witnessed a growth of 165%, to Rs1,156 crore from Rs436 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Its mutual fund and insurance businesses contributed to the income. TCS Q3 net up 19% at Rs 1,327 crore (Business Standard 17th Jan 2008) Big deals across sectors, verticals and geographies — such as the recent $1.2 billion one with The Nielsen Company — are helping India’s largest IT services provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) comfortably stride towards becoming an over $5 billion company by the end of the financial year 2007-08. In line with market expectations, the company posted a consolidated net profit (Indian GAAP) of Rs 1,327 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2007 — up 19 per cent over the corresponding quarter last financial year. Its revenue figure of around $1.5 billion (Rs 5,923 crore) was an increase of 22 per cent year-on-year (YoY).
