Forrester lowers outlook for IT growth in US(The Economic Times 10th Jan 2008) The cement industry in Tamil Nadu has agreed to sell subsidised cement to support the “economically weaker and middle class consumer.”
According to an official press release, in deference to the State Government’s demand that cement manufacturers control prices, the industry has agreed to sell 20 lakh bags (50 kg a bag) of cement a month at a subsidised rate of Rs 200 a bag to support the economically weaker and middle class consumer. Cement now sells around Rs 240 a bag in the open market.
Manufacturers and others selling cement here have said each company would pick up the districts in which it would sell the subsidised cement. Government officials at the district level would identify the beneficiaries and issue permits. The manufacturers would directly deliver the cement to the buyer. More
Forrester downgrades 2008 spending estimates(The Hindu Business Line 10th Jan 2008) Forrester Research, in its latest report has said that it is downgrading its forecast for 2008 IT spending (including operational budgets for equipment, IT consulting and outsourcing services as well as IT salaries) from 6.4 per cent to 5.2 per cent while its forecast for IT equipment (including capital purchases) spending is down from 7.8 per cent to a growth of 4.8 per cent.
In other words, it is saying that IT spending – be it on goods, products or services would grow, but at lower than earlier estimated rates. More

Mid-sized information technology (IT) companies Mastek Ltd and iGate Global Solutions Ltd reported decent results for the quarter ended December and also reassured investors that they aren’t seeing any slowdown yet in the US market.NSE’s CNX IT index gained 0.5% as a result, on a day the markets declined marginally.
Phaneesh Murthy, CEO, iGate Global Solutions, said: “Visibility of revenues is getting better and we are looking at another good sequential quarter.” Nearly 78% of the company’s business is from US clients. Mastek gets a much lower proportion of its business (25%) from the US and has no exposure to the banking industry, but even then the fact its US business grew 50% in dollar terms is heartening. More

Jyoti Structures bags Rs 253 cr worth orders

Jyoti Structures on Tuesday said it has bagged two orders worth Rs 253 crore from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd and Eskom Enterprises (Pty) Ltd for construction of transmission lines. The company has bagged Rs 160-crore order from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd for construction of transmission lines and sub-stations. Besides, the company's joint venture company Jyoti Structures Africa (Pty) Ltd has bagged a contract for Eskom Enterprises (Pty) Ltd, the electricity utility of South Africa for construction of transmission line. The scope of the order from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company includes supply and erection of Bujagali Interconnection Project, the manufacturer of transmission line towers informed the Bombay Stock Exchange. The contract valued at around $39.64 million (Rs 160 crore) is to be executed in 24 months, the company said, adding the company would construct 220 kV and 132 kV transmission lines and substations.

Inflation hits 42-week high of 7.57%

Inflation rose to a 42-week high of 7.57 per cent in the 12 months to April 19, higher than the previous week’s annual rise of 7.33 per cent, largely on account of an increase in food, metal products and industrial fuel prices, official data showed. Analysts said that the inflation of 7.57 per cent was “slightly higher” than their expectations and this could be due to price increase in tea and certain items in the steel group. India’s wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation now stood highest since November 13, 2004, when it was 7.68 per cent. Economists expressed confidence that the recent fiscal and monetary measures would yield results in the coming weeks. They, however, noted that inflation was unlikely to return to the comfort zone of the Reserve Bank of India any time this fiscal. “There could be some easing of food inflation given the good wheat production and likelihood of good monsoon.
