Market Closing Report

Sensex recovered 400 points from the day's low and ended over 150 points higher. The Sensex plunged to a low of 20,077.40 before being quoted at 20,465.30 towards the close of trade.
Bank stocks done remarkably today. UCO Bank up 20% ,Allahabad Bank and Axis Bank up 7%, Union Bank up 5.7%, Dena Bank up over 4%, PNB up 2%.
About 1983 shares have advanced, 910 shares declined, and 21 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 10,050.39 up 1.2%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 13,895.06 up 1.4%.
The BSE Bankex was up 3% at 11,881.61. Canara Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Centurion Bank, Oriental Bank, Allahabad Bank closed in green.
The BSE Capital Goods Index closed at 19,717.87 down 0.2%. Triveni Engg, Praj Industries, BHEL, Kirloskar Bros, Crompton Greave closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,759.40 up 1%. Hind Motors, Apollo Tyres, Tube Investment, Tata Motors, Escorts, MICO closed lower.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 20,167.18 up 0.5%. Jindal Saw, Jindal Steel, NALCO, JindalStainless, Shree Precoated closed higher
The BSE FMCG Index closed up 1% at 2,397.13. Tata Tea, Nestle, ITC, Colgate ended higher
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 13,386.06 up 1%. Reliance Natura, HPCL, Petronet LNG, ONGC, Essar Oil ended higher.
The BSE IT Index was at 4,462.24 down 0.2%. HCL Tech, Satyam, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Patni Computer closed lower.
The BSE Realty Index was at 13,424.70 up 3%. Anant Raj Ind, Unitech, Mahindra Life, Indiabulls Real, Akruti City, Phoenix closed higher.

Jyoti Structures on Tuesday said it has bagged two orders worth Rs 253 crore from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd and Eskom Enterprises (Pty) Ltd for construction of transmission lines. The company has bagged Rs 160-crore order from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd for construction of transmission lines and sub-stations. Besides, the company's joint venture company Jyoti Structures Africa (Pty) Ltd has bagged a contract for Eskom Enterprises (Pty) Ltd, the electricity utility of South Africa for construction of transmission line. The scope of the order from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company includes supply and erection of Bujagali Interconnection Project, the manufacturer of transmission line towers informed the Bombay Stock Exchange. The contract valued at around $39.64 million (Rs 160 crore) is to be executed in 24 months, the company said, adding the company would construct 220 kV and 132 kV transmission lines and substations.

Inflation hits 42-week high of 7.57%

Inflation rose to a 42-week high of 7.57 per cent in the 12 months to April 19, higher than the previous week’s annual rise of 7.33 per cent, largely on account of an increase in food, metal products and industrial fuel prices, official data showed. Analysts said that the inflation of 7.57 per cent was “slightly higher” than their expectations and this could be due to price increase in tea and certain items in the steel group. India’s wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation now stood highest since November 13, 2004, when it was 7.68 per cent. Economists expressed confidence that the recent fiscal and monetary measures would yield results in the coming weeks. They, however, noted that inflation was unlikely to return to the comfort zone of the Reserve Bank of India any time this fiscal. “There could be some easing of food inflation given the good wheat production and likelihood of good monsoon.
