Day End Report

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 472 points at 11,781 on the back of record gains on the Wall Street wherein the two major indices viz Dow Jones and Nasdaq both soaring over 11% each. The index touched a high of 11,870 in early noon trades. The index, thereafter, witnessed profit taking and touched a low of 11,410 - down 460 points from the day's high - at the fag end of the day. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 174 points at 11,483. The BSE IT index soared 5.4% to 2,940. The Healthcare index surged 4.7% to 3,405, and Realty index rallied nearly 2% to 2,805. The Metal index, however, shed 2% at 6,852. The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,683 stocks traded, 1,654 advanced, 974 declined and 55 were unchanged today. Domestic car sales back on growth track, up 2.84% in Sept

According to the figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), domestic passenger car sales in September stood at 1,08,823 units as against 1,05,822 units in the same month last year, while that of motorcycles was at 6,32,369 units as against 5,48,816 units last year. “The numbers are actually better than what we expected considering the fact that there was the 'shradh' period during September, when customers postpone purchases,” SIAM Director General, Mr Dilip Chenoy said. He said increased domestic sales were a reflection of confidence returning back to the industry after the rough ride in the previous two months, however, adding it was premature to say the worse is behind. “For the full fiscal we would keep the growth projection to around 10-12 per cent for passenger vehicles. T he index rallied to a high fo 11,361 on the back of sharp gains in banking, realty and technology stocks. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 804 points at 11,332. The BSE Bankex rallied 12.5% to 5,985. The Capital Goods and Consumer Durables indices surged 10.3% each to 8,810 and 2,359, respectively. The Power and Realty indices gained 9% each at 2,023 and 2,750, respectively. The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,672 stocks traded, 1,687 advanced, 926 declined and the rest were unchanged today. Reliance Communications zoomed 20% to Rs 285. Reliance Infrastructure and ICICI Bank soared around 17% each to Rs 604 and Rs 425, respectively. Sterlite surged 16% to Rs 318. HDFC Bank rallied 12.5% to Rs 1,178. Axis Bank net surges 77% to Rs 403cr

Axis Bank has reported a 76.85 per cent growth in net profit at Rs 402.91 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2008 when compared with its corresponding quarter a year-ago. According to a release issued by the bank to the Bombay Stock Exchange, Q2FY09 total income rose to Rs 3,239.45 crore from Rs 2,059.37 crore in Q2FY08.

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 156 points at 12,900 on the back of negative cues from the global market. The index tried to recover but could only manage to touch a high of 13,001. Relentless selling in metal and oil & gas stocks saw the index slide as the day progressed. Banking, capital goods and technology stocks were also very weak today. The index tumbled to a low of 12,473 at the fag end of the day. The Sensex finally settled with a huge loss of 529 points (4%) at 12,526. In the process, the index shed 576 points (4.4%) for the week, and is down a whopping 1,516 points (10.8%) in the last two trading weeks. The BSE Metal index cracked 7% (635 points) to 8,417, and the Oil & Gas index plunged 5.7% (513 points) to 8,427. The Bankex dropped nearly 4% (259 points) to 6,429, and the IT index shed 3.3% (108 points) at 3,110. The Sensex opened 24 points higher at 13,717, but soon slipped into the negative zone. Persistent selling technology and realty stocks saw the index slide to a low of 13,431 - down 286 points from the day's high. However, some value buying at lower levels helped the index recover some of its losses towards the close. The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 145 points at 13,547. The BSE IT and Realty indices shed 2% each at 3,348 and 3,840, respectively. The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,665 stocks traded, 1,687 declined and 901 advanced today. Wipro and Ranbaxy plunged nearly 5% each to Rs 353 and Rs 296, respectively. Hindalco slumped 4% to Rs 105. Grasim and TCS tumbled around 3.5% each to Rs 1,867 and Rs 690, respectively. DLF and ACC slipped nearly 3% each to Rs 389 and Rs 611, respectively. Bharti Airtel, Tata Power and ITC shed 2.5% each at Rs 791, Rs 999 and Rs 188, respectively. Sterlite dropped over 2% to Rs 477. BHEL wins Rs 338 cr contract from Sail

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (Bhel) has bagged a Rs 338 crore contract from Steel Authority of India Ltd for Turbo-blower packages for its Rourkela Steel Plant.   Steel Authority of India Limited has placed the order with Bhel for three Turbo-blower packages. Significantly, this is the highest-value single order for Compressors received by Bhel till date, the company said in a release.    The equipment will be supplied by Bhel’s manufacturing plants at Hyderabad and Bangalore in a tight schedule of 29 months.  As a result of increased customer focus and renewed efforts for sustained presence in varied industrial segments, Bhel’s Industry  Sector  recorded an all time high order inflow of Rs 7,860 crore in 2007-08, an increase of  20 per cent over the previous year.
