The U.S. economy shed 84,000 jobs in August and the unemployment rate jumped to 6.1 percent, a worse than expected showing for a weakened labor market.
It is the highest unemployment rate since mid-2003. U.S. jobs and institutions have now eliminated roughly 600,000 jobs this year. The number of unemployed stood at 9.4 million nationwide, and has grown 2.2 million over the past year.
